Hello everyone!
I hope you all had a good week.
I love Guadalajara. It's a great ward here and the city is really cool. Last week we had 7 lunch or dinner appointments with members. Also on Saturday night the ward had a mission farewell for a girl in the ward here. There was a short presentation where there was a slideshow and a couple people spoke and also me and my companion and the Sisters who are also in our ward sang a musical number. They had asked us to do it that afternoon and we had 30 minutes to practice before but luckily it's the hymn that makes people feel the Spirit, not the singers. Then afterwards they served a ton of paella and other foods and they played music and some people were dancing Spanish dances which looked pretty cool. It's way different from the type of dancing you see in the U.S.
On the subject of celebrations, the entire city is in the middle of a fiesta and they're all really into it. We've already seen a couple parades and the city is decorated and on one of the nights of the parades there were peñas, groups of musicians wandering around the city playing music to get everyone ready for the party. It's kind of like a mariachi band except bigger and without sombreros. Last week on Wednesday we did exchanges with the other elders in our district, so I went to Azuqueca de Henares for a day and one of the elders there came to Guadalajara. Azuqueca is smaller than Guadalajara but it's similar. We passed by some people's houses and talked to people on the street and helped an old lady carry her groceries home as she told us all about her kids. She walked really slowly so it took about 45 minutes but she was really nice and gave us water and pears afterwards. She said the missionaries could come over anytime so hopefully she will be open to the missionaries coming back and teaching her.
Another awesome thing is that last Monday the bishop asked if I could help one of the boys in the ward to learn piano. Right now there are 2 pianists in the ward and they want help with more. It started because we were at the church and he bishop's son Arturo, about 14 years old, was playing the piano so I went over and started talking to him and I played some stuff for him. So I guess he talked with his dad. So tomorrow we're meeting Arturo and the other boy who wants to learn, Santiago, at the church to start. I'm really excited to be able to do it because I miss being able to play the piano every day but we'll see how it goes when I have to talk about the piano in Spanish.
This week I have been praying to know how I can be better converted to Christ so that I can be more devoted to doing His work. An answer that I got was to every day write down how I have seen the Lord's hand in my life. I've been doing that and even though some days it's harder to think of something I'm always able to do it. It really helps to see how much of an influence He has had in my life.
I hope you all have a great week and I love you all.
Elder Corey Dobbs
